Hockey Alberta Centennial

Celebrate the past…

It was snowing; the pond was covered with a thin layer of white powder. Rocks were strategically placed on either side of the pond to represent a net. The boys skated back and forth on their daily shoes with blades strapped onto the bottom held on by leather straps. The object they passed back and forth was not a puck, but a frozen apple. The equipment they wore consisted of felt padding and knee pads. Helmets were unheard of as caps with ear flaps and "toques" made the most sense. It was 1907, and hockey in Alberta was just starting to grow.

We wouldn’t be where we are today without those before us. These are the people who have the stories that make our history so real the stories that only some of us will be fortunate enough to hear. We want to tell those stories and share with future generations the road where it all began…the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association.

Challenge the future….

He stood at almost 4 feet and could barely skate the length of the ice without losing his balance. He tripped over pucks, sticks and every other obstacle in his way. Every now and then a laugh would escape his mouth, but the smile never left his rosy face. He was 6-years-old and this was his third time playing hockey. In less than 20 years, this boy will become a professional athlete in the National Hockey League, or at least this is the dream…

The Alberta Amateur Hockey Association, now Hockey Alberta and its members, represent all that is great about the game, the fun, the challenges, the rewards, the life experiences. Through a window to the past, will challenge the future to make the game the best it can be.

100 years of Hockey Alberta…

Over the past 100 years there is one thing that has stayed constant, something that hasn’t changed since the beginning… the love of the game. Whether hockey is a favourite pastime, a present hobby or an opportunity to create new memories with your kids or grandchildren, it’s a chance to bring everyone together.

Celebrate Hockey Alberta’s centennial year and help us continue to grow the game by giving back to the youth in our province. These are our future community leaders, let’s make the next 100 years even better for them and everyone else within the hockey community. Let’s relive these stories and make them come alive for generations to come.

It’s 2007; join us as we celebrate our centennial, 100 great years of memories, laughs and great Alberta hockey.
